Spiritual Racism is Still Racism

Note: this article may surprise some of you. It may offend some of you. I apologize in advance if it does.

Let’s play a little game.

I will describe a historical scenario to you and then ask you to pick when you think it took place.

A writer publishes her belief that a new “race” of humans exists that has special traits and characteristics that make it superior to the rest of humans on the planet. Other authors read about this, without seeing any scientific evidence for it. The idea is embraced by fringe elements in the occult and spiritualist movements. Authors extend the concept and add more ideas to it. In the absence of scientific evidence, some authors attempt to give credibility to the topic by “channeling” authoritative “proof.” The concept takes on legs, and within 30 years, it has been so often repeated that it is generally accepted as factual.

Factions begin to claim remarkable things about this new race like they are “superhuman” and “pure” and are more “evolved.” Some writers claim the race should not mate with lesser “mongrel” races or even go so far as to say that all other races should not be allowed to reproduce.

Sound familiar?

Did this happen in the 1870s to 1940s or is it happening from the 1970s to now?

In the 1870s and 1880s, a woman named HP Blavatsky wrote a number of books on Spiritualism, Occultism, and related topics. She also co-founded the Theosophical Society. Among her writings, she introduced (or re-introduced) a concept that the human race had evolved through some previous, less-advanced states, and that the most-evolved race of humans was that of the Aryan Race.  Mostly she was echoing the writings of Max Muller, on the subject.

This idea was later picked up and distorted more by proto-Nazi writers including Arthur de Gobineau and groups like the Thule Society and of course Adolf Hitler. The racial hatred fostered by this ideology led to the Holocaust and continues to be espoused today by neo-Nazis and other hate groups.

So something that started among the Spiritualism movement (essentially the equivalent of today’s New Age community but in the late 1800s) was distorted and corrupted into a system of racism that led to the death of millions.

But, that’s not what I was referring to at all. In fact, I was talking about something new that has come up in the modern New Age movement in the past 20 to 30 years. This is a concept that the human race is allegedly evolving into a new species of beings that is somehow better and more “enlightened” than normal humans.

This is the so-called Indigo Children. The concept started in the 1970s with the writing of New Age writer Nancy Ann Trappe. She believed that people had colored auras that remained fairly constant in their lifetime. I should point out that even among New Agers, this was not a prevailing theory. Most proponents of auras believed (and still do) that your aura changes to reflect your current condition. She had observed, so she claimed, that in the 1960s and 1970s a large number of children had a prevailing aura “life color” that was indigo, which is often the color associated with the Third Eye chakra. She never claimed that there was a new race or that there were any special powers present among these children. She also pointed out that this observed phenomenon ended during the 1970s.

However, other authors took her observations and expanded on it, creating a unique and new mythos that seemed to catch on quickly. In 1998 Lee Carroll and Jan Tober hit on a financially viable concept when they wrote the book The Indigo Children: The New Kids Have Arrived. They now claimed that the human race had evolved into a new species. They ignored the fact that Trappe had stated that the period of children with indigo auras had passed. They also changed the dates for when the Indigo Children appeared, to be more aligned with their book. The fact was that the children Trappe had identified would all be in their 20’s and 30’s by the time of Carroll and Tober’s book.

Soon more writers wrote even more fanciful books supporting the claim of the newly evolved human race and an Indigo Children craze began to take hold of the New Age community. This included one of the most famous (infamous) “channelers” who announced to the world that the Indigo Children were real. Well, where was he for the past 30 years and why did not come forward until after the topic was widely known and accepted by many in the New Age circles?

Many people began to self-identify themselves as the Indigo Children by looking at the list of characteristics attributed to this new species. When you look at the list of characteristics, it is so generic and easily applicable to so many people who feel they are “different”. Wikipedia says that Indigo Children:

  • Are empathetic, curious, and strong-willed
  • Are often perceived by friends and family as being strange
  • Possess a clear sense of self-definition and purpose
  • Show a strong innate subconscious spirituality from early childhood (which, however, does not necessarily imply a direct interest in spiritual or religious areas)
  • Have a strong feeling of entitlement, or deserving to be here
  • Have high intelligence quotient
  • Possess an inherent intuitive ability
  • Are resistant to rigid, control-based paradigms of authority

Also, it is claimed that often these children were diagnosed as having ADHD, OCD or Autism. Proponents of the idea started telling children, and their parents, that ADHD was a myth and that the kids were actually a newly evolved type of human, like the X-Men. They eschewed traditional therapy and medications. Soon, many people bought into this, as nobody wants to think there might be something physically wrong with their children. It is far easier to accept that their children are actually special and better than others.

By now a plethora of books, videos and films have been produced on the topic. Many of which make increasingly wild and fanciful claims for this fictitious new race. To date, not one shred of scientific evidence has been provided to demonstrate this genetic mutation or evolution has occurred. Yet, millions of New Agers believe this to be FACT.

Some current proponents of the Indigo Children ideology have even gone so far as to say that Indigo Children are so special that they should not breed with non-Indigo’s so to keep the new race pure. Other authors have even stated that normal humans should be prohibited from reproducing so that the human race can complete its evolution into Indigos more efficiently.

There are groups of self-proclaimed Indigos who look down on anyone who disagrees with their viewpoint as being inferior and less evolved and incapable of the higher spiritual reasoning that Indigos possess. The “I’m Indigo, and you’re not!” commentary is no different than the clique mentality of preppies, cool kids, and other elitist groups. It says, “we’re special” and “you’re not.”

This is elitism. This is racism. But it is Spiritual Racism. And, like it or not, Spiritual Racism is still racism.

Is there much difference between the elitist views of these self-proclaimed Indigos and those of the racial purists of the 1920s and 1930s who sought to lock up the inferior races in concentration camps, sterilize them so they could not reproduce and exterminate them by the millions?

Have we learned nothing?

Oh, and if one new race of beings wasn’t enough, writers in the New Age community now claim there are several new species of genetically improved humans including Crystal and Rainbow Children.

I am not saying that Indigo Children do not exist. Maybe they do. Maybe they don’t. Whether they do or not is not important. What does matter is that we are always inclusive of people and that we don’t think of ourselves as unique, special or better than others because of our race or in this case our species?

  1. I wanted to clarify something. I am not saying that Indigo Children do not exist, nor am I saying they do. I also do not wish to insult or attack people for their beliefs. The purpose of this article was to point out how some people have taken the concept of Indigo Children to an alarming extreme that is the antithesis of the principles of freedom, equality, sharing and acceptance which are hallmarks of the New Age movement.

I was visiting another website the focuses on spirituality and similar concepts. They clearly and vocally espouse the concepts of Indigo Children. They also quote and promote books by a man who has been shown time and time again to be a fraud, a liar, and a charlatan. In fact, this is one of the reasons why we created Sane Spirituality in the first place.

Do not blindly accept what you read, hear or are told as being the Truth. Explore. Investigate. Find out for yourselves. This includes not listening to or blindly following what I say. I’m human. I’m flawed. I make mistakes. My Truth is mine, it may not be yours.

The greatest test, for me, of the validity of any new age or spiritual concept is what I call the Love test. Does the concept align with the ideas of Universal Love and Universal Light? If it does, then I am more prone to accept it. If not, if it promotes, for example, exclusivity and racial superiority, then I cannot believe it is a valid part of the Universal Truth.

I leave you to judge and decide for yourselves.
